Beautiful Things: 17th Century Flemish Cabinet

A Flemish Cabinet, 17th Century, loaded with drawers! From the 1600’s, this certainly has more unique features and details than we see in more contemporary antiques! The tortoise shell accents appear to almost be red, what I call a cinnabar red. I really see this cabinet (at about 30” high) mounted on a large block to raise the approachable height and give a more meaningful and intimate grasp of the work. Perhaps a pewter grey fine linen, or a slub silk covered plinth to match the steel/silver colour of the lion mounts at the bracket feet. Place all of this against a backdrop of the same cinnabar red wall (in velvet wall covering!) Oh my! Give me a pair of pewter and crystal sconces and I’m all in!

Ebony, nickel, bronze, red tortoiseshell veneer. This is a typical late 17th century Antwerp cabinet. It makes a lavish impression, this kind of furniture contributed to the luxurious ambiance of reception rooms in the Baroque castles and palaces that were being built throughout Europe.
